about

"Torch Song..." is one of the darker songs on this record. It really is just about dealing with heroin abuse in an unhealthy, co-dependant relationship. This is something that troubled my life badly as as a teenager and took me years to sort through the guilt and horror of the memories.

"Wrote our names on each other, sharpened pen for lovers," is obviously about shooting up. The chorus hook of "I know it's no one's job to save me from the truth" isn't about not being saved by Jesus or something, as one fan asked me once if it was an anti-religious statement. Not at all. The real meaning is that other people can try to help you but it is up to you to kick hard drugs yourself if you ever get down that bad road.

Dave Bodie put down a killer QOTSA type stomp beat to this. It is one of Kurt Brown's best riffs also, kind of reminding me of a sped up version of "Sad But True" by Metallica. I think I was also listening to a lot of Every Time i Die around this time and wanted to have a song with some swagger, if a very different vocal style to that band. I actually wish we tracked this just a few bpm's slower but this song is powerful and intense for me.
